I dont have many places to share such news that people dont look at me like " you have already lost how much? Where did you start?" So, I just wanted to share that stepping on the scale, at the doctor's office, yesterday I found that I have lost 109lbs since Dec. 2005. 72 lbs since my lap band surgery Nov 5th of this year.
It is by far the most weight I have lost dieting in my entire life. Well, I mean the most I have lost on any one diet my entire life. My previous record was 82 lbs about ten years ago on Nutri-Systems. The big difference that diet felt like so much work and working with the lap band has exactly the opposite.
Highlights of the process so far include being able to sit on the couch with my legs together, snapping my fingers, and walking my dog around my block ( a little over a half a mile of suburban walking ) for the first time since we moved here two years ago and, buying clothes at something other than a Big and Tall shop.
Needless to say, I am pretty happy with the process so far. I can only imagine what the next couple of years will bring.

An awesome achievement, Esteban!
Sat, January 12, 2008 - 8:15 AMEsteban, thank you SOOO much for the update and a huge congratulations!
Obviously, it's a MAJOR milestone. Would you mind sharing some of the things you've learned? How did the surgery help? Has it caused any difficulties that you didn't expect? What changes have you made for the short-term? What about long-term/permanent ones?
I certainly remember the first time I got to buy an article of clothing at a regular department store instead of the big/tall store. I was ECSTATIC. I also remember when I realized that I could cross my legs... something I hadn't been able to do for twenty years. Walking, oh yeah. Even something as simple and carefree as selecting a chair that could support my weight or be wide enough (or didn't have any arms at all) became less of a worry.
I just passed my five year mark. I lost 230 pounds and I've been holding steady around 200 for three years. A few problems persist but I deal with them... thanks to my family.
How is your support structure?
Love and light, dear ones.

Re: An awesome achievement, Esteban!
Mon, January 14, 2008 - 12:13 PMWell done, Esteban!
I've slowed down the past month or so but I'm going in for a band adjustment next week, in hopes of kicking myself back into gear. I know most of it is my food choices, but I've also been able to fit more in at meals, so I'm going to get a little more fluid in that band!
I really want to get under 200 by March (23 lbs to go), so it's time to get back on track!

Re: An awesome achievement, Esteban!
Wed, January 23, 2008 - 5:25 AMThanks everyone for the kind words of support. Sharing my success with my social circle has been somewhat of a minefield of emotions that I really was not expecting. Most are kind. Some are mad, some are jealous. But, over all they are supportive at one level or another.
Early things I have learned are that just about everything I have heard from doctors, nurses, nutritionists, therapists, has been right on the money on how to expect the band to work. I really have had no surprises.
The surgery helps medically and mentally. Medically because all sorts of health related numbers are down to levels I used to have ten years ago. Mentally because there is no doubt about whether or not I will be able to stay on this new eating plan long enough to achieve the goals I am after. In the past, there was always the fear of failure, of giving into tempation, of just becoming bored with whatever diet regime I undertook at the time. Now, that option is not present. I cannot opt out of this choice without undergoing another surgical procedure. That is a lot more motivation than just worrying about how fast I would put the pounds back on once I stopped eating the Nutri-System's food, etc.
Short term changes have been buying the dessert size plates and bowls to match my dinnerware so four ounces of food actually fills up a plate/bowl. Something about a plate full of food (no matter how small) is more satisfying than sitting down to a full size dinner plate with my new portion of food. I am also wearing all the "old" clothes from the back of my closet for the time being. Financially I cannot replace my entire wardrobe right now so I am going to just have to look a little baggy for the time being..no matter how much it bothers my mother-in-love.
The long term effects are a bit harder to imagine right now. I am still in the "honeymoon" stage and just enjoying exploring things I can do today that I was unable to do just six months ago, much less things I haven't done in years. Like Monday when we went to a movie theater, in a mall, that we were unfamiliar with. Six months ago, if I had discovered we parked on the wrong side of the mall, I would have gotten back in the car and driven to the closet possible parking space. Monday, I said " Well, its a bit of a walk and if we want to be on time we better hurry." My partner was visibly shocked. It felt REALLY good.
Thanks again for all the support. Hope everyone is staying warm in whatever part of country your dealing with this current cold spell.

Wed, January 23, 2008 - 2:48 PMOkay, totally off-topic, but the temperature comment is cracking me up! Come on up to MN, where we haven't gotten above 5 degrees in almost a week, and the low tonight is -15!!!!
Everyone here's all atwitter that we're going to get into the 30's for the weekend - that's 45 degrees warmer than the low this week!!
I did a phone interview with a company in LA and they were jokingly talking about how cold it was at 67 degrees today. HA!
